good times, trauma and sin

I had the opportunity to write a mini-sermon to be shared with my congregation back home this week. I focussed on "sin." Which was a whole new world for me. Now today and tomorrow I'm at a workshop on peacebuilding in situations of trauma.

Heavy. Terribly heavy, and I'm not even traumatized. I can't even imagine trying to exercise these ways of thinking in situations of real trauma. One minor though significant thing I did pull out of today, is that our body's reactions to stress (example, shaking, twitching) is natural, and it's healthier to just let your body do its thing than to hold it back just because (for example) you're embarrassed to spasm as you walk down the street to the tube. Apparently after situations of extreme stress such things as dancing and massage are as useful as talk therapy. I now have even more motivation to go out next week-end.

Going out last week-end I was disappointed at the focus on drinking rather than said dancing. And I wondered if it was a cultural thing, or if we just hit a bad venue. Even now I don't understand the appeal of going somewhere so loud you have to yell to have a conversation. I mean, if you aren't there to dance, why are you there? That said it was good times. I rambled on about collective sin, and my friend talked about investment banking, and I can only hope she was as intrigued as I was by our totally different worlds.

If you're interested in reading my sermon, just drop me a line and I'll email you a copy.

Hey Dora,
Although I was there on Sunday to hear it, will you forward your sermon to me? Thanks!
Also, although my life is so low stress in comparison to those who have experienced trauma, after I spoke in front of the 11-12 York students on Saturday, I was totally shivering from nervousness. I had to put my second sweater on. I got chills, and they were multiplying ;)
Anyways, that has nothing to do with anything... XP
Loves and Hugs xoxo

Totally agree with you about venues where the music is too loud to talk. I suppose it's different if you're there to see a show, but at a pub where the music is canned? You just end up with a sore throat the next day.
